Art Song in 1821-1921-2021

SongFest is proud to present “21”, a three-part series releasing October 21st, 2021 focusing on art song from the Western classical tradition in 1821, 1921, and 2021. View a brief trailer below.

1821: The Miracle of Franz Schubert

1921: When I was one-and-twenty I heard a wise man say…

The first two parts in our series are video lectures presented by the preeminent scholar and pianist in this repertoire, Graham Johnson, who explores a selection of art songs from 1821 and 1921, and considers the contextualizing history that leads up to them. His recorded narration includes well over three hours of video content and is accompanied by images, photographs, documents and other resources.

2021: Whose Song is it Anyway?

For our 2021 offering we take a slightly different track. In exploring our past, we were curious about how future musicians might look back on our ‘now’. Our attention is placed on video submissions from 21 different artists who are creating and thinking about how they fit into the 21st Century landscape, and how our art form can thrive through the promise of globalization, opening the doors to more creators and performers, and a more equitable cultural exchange.

In this part, each artist shares an opinion on what the legacy of art song will be in the 21st Century.  Participating artists include both SongFest alums and established art song luminaries such as: Roberta Alexander, Jamie Barton, J’Nai Bridges, Amy Burton, Hai-Ting Chinn, James Conlon, Sasha Cooke, Jake Heggie, Alan Louis Smith, and more. 2021 trailer is below:
