SongFest Winter Intensive for Singers and Collaborative Pianists

A small number of selected singers and pianists with a particular interest in art song will be chosen for an exclusive, tuition-free intensive performing workshop in song and opera at Hidden Valley Music Seminars in beautiful Carmel Valley, California.
Fellows will work closely with some of the most distinguished artists in opera and song. Baritone Sir Thomas Allen and pianist Graham Johnson will focus on the lieder of Franz Schubert including the two great song cycles: Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise. Mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer and pianist Craig Rutenberg will coach Lieder, and along with Stewart Robertson, former Music Director of Glimmerglass Opera will coach arias by Mozart. SongFest is the United States' premier art song festival and training program held each June at The Colburn School in Los Angeles. SongFest attracts an international roster of leading recital artists and pedagogues as well as students from some of the nation’s top music conservatories. Audiences enjoy a vibrant concert series presented in Colburn's state-of-the-art venues, and auditors can attend daily masterclasses and lectures led by the most exciting artists of today.

The Institute (comprised of the Professional, Young Artist, and Studio Artist programs) provides a rigorous curriculum addressing the concerns of the 21st-century singer and collaborative pianist at every level of their study with classes in acting, movement, diction, repertoire and career guidance workshops, daily master classes taught by an international roster of leading recital artists and pedagogues, collaborations with leading American composers, the presentation of at least one commissioned world premiere every summer, and an exciting concert series presented at Colburn’s state-of-the-art venues.
