"Breaking the Song Barrier" Pepperdine University, Malibu, CA 2010 PROGRAMS OF STUDY Performing workshops for career-oriented singers and collaborative pianists. No age limit YOUNG ARTIST PROGRAM Melanie Emelio, program director Jennifer Tung, assistant director Wei-En Hsu, Victoria Kirsch, Jennifer Tung, Lucas Wong, vocal coaches Hisako Hiratsuka, staff pianist The SongFest Young Artist program is designed to provide intensive study and training for talented young singers normally in their undergraduate years in a healthy professional positive environment. Instruction includes performing master classes as well as Song Literature classes, movement, repertoire classes, diction and daily coaching's with the Young Artist coaches. These young singers will have the opportunity to join the Professional Fellows for performance in various master classes and public performances in addition to their own classes. INTERN PROGRAM Melanie Emelio, program director Jennifer Tung, assistant director Wei-En Hsu, Victoria Kirsch, Jennifer Tung, Lucas Wong, vocal coaches The SongFest Intern Program is designed for highly talented young singers between the ages of 15-18. This program provides intensive study for young singers in a healthy, professional and unique learning environment; learning from leading musicians and colleagues in the program. Singers are challenged to improve their technical and expressive musical skills, and to explore the great classical songs and arias. Students will have twice-weekly private lessons, as well as daily coaching's, classes in diction, repertoire, technique, and movement. To add to the learning experience, each singer will have a private session in the Kwong Vocal Arts Lab at Pepperdine University. These aspiring singers will have their own master classes and be selected to perform on select concerts. By interacting with the more experienced singers, they will be exposed to many different faculty and layers of learning. Audition is live in cities listed below or by tape. A pianist will be provided or you may bring your own. SINGERS (Professional and Young Artist Program) Please prepare at least four selections of contrasting style and language of your own choice. One must be an art song, others an aria, oratorio, musical theatre or additional art songs. Your choices should demonstrate your strengths. (Intern Program) Three contrasting selections of musical style and language of your choice. One must be in Italian. Note: If you wish to be considered for "The American SongBook Concert" with John Musto, a musical theatre selection is required. PIANISTS Please prepare two songs in contrasting style and two other works of your choice - arias, chamber music or additional songs. Pianists will work closely with all SongFest faculty in both master classes and private sessions. In addition to the singer classes, Margo Garrett and Martin Katz will offer special Pianists' Only Classes and Margo Garrett will offer private lessons to all pianists. Pianists will perform in all the concerts and performance forums. You may either bring a singer to the audition or a singer or a "coache di voce" will be provided. SongFest will present several public recitals in Pepperdine's intimate Raitt Recital Hall featuring the Professional Fellows, Young Artist and Intern singers. A Celebration of French Song, Opera and Operetta June 19, 2010 New Voices in American Song featuring the songs of resident composers Tom Cipullo, John Musto and Lori Laitman. Program will include a new piece by Laitman commissioned expressly for Songfest. As well as this premiere, the recital program will also include a West Coast premiere of another Laitman work. June 22, 2010 American Song Book Concert John Musto, piano June 24, 2010 American Song is Alive and Well, coached and devised by Paul Sperry featuring the Young Artist and Intern singers. After acceptance notification and payment of the tuition deposit, the repertoire selection process will begin. Each singer and pianist will work closely with Director Rosemary Ritter and the faculty to choose repertoire to be prepared for the program. All music must be fully prepared and memorized before arriving at SongFest. In addition to the specific repertoire choices of the singers, faculty will assign selected songs. |

Accommodations Accommodations are available for all participants of SongFest 2010 on campus either in either in the Lovernich student apartments or Dorm 1. A limited number of participants can request Drescher apartment accommodations, however this is a longer distance to walk on campus. We are not able to provide campus accommodation to the family and friends of Songfest. Pepperdine housing will only be made available to registered SongFest participants. Bed lines and towels are provided and the common areas of the dorm or apartments rooms cleaned once a week. Dormitories Each residence hall has six suites and a main lobby. A suite has four double bedrooms, a double bathroom, and a common living room. Double bedrooms have two beds, two desks, two dressers, and two small bookcases. Each suite bathroom, shared by all , has two sinks, showers and toilets. The suite living room has a table and chairs, a sofa and a full-length mirror. The main lobby is a large living room with a fireplace, a television and telephone. Participants will be accommodated either two per double room or one per double room (private bedroom). The twenty-two-night package cost includes three meals each day served at nearby dining facilities and a facility fee. Package cost for dorm is $1550 with 2 per bedroom, 8 per suite and 1 large bathroom shared by all. Package cost for dorm is $1750 with 1 per bedroom, and1 large bathroom shared by all. Lovernich Apartments Each apartment has two double bedrooms, a double bathroom, a common living room and a kitchenette. The kitchens are not stocked with anything. Double bedrooms have two beds, two desks, two dressers, and two small bookcases. Each apartment bathroom has two sinks, showers and toilets. The suite living room has a table and chairs, and a sofa. Participants will be accommodated either two per double room or one per double room( private bedroom). The twenty-two-night package cost includes three meals each day served at nearby dining facilities and a facility fee. Package cost for Lovernich is $1650 with 4 persons per apartment and 2 persons per bedroom. Package cost for Lovernich is $1850 with 2 persons per apartment and 1 person per bedroom. Note: the prices quoted are a package rate. Should you arrive late or leave early, the room and board will not be prorated. For pricing and information about Drescher Graduate apartments, please contact the SongFest Program Administrator. Should these accommodations not meet your needs, participants may rent hotel rooms or other rooms in the Malibu area at their own expense. Participants must let us know by April 15, 2010 if they intend to stay on-campus or if they will make alternative arrangements for their housing. Please note there will be a $20 per day (total: $440) facility fee for all commuting and off campus participants. Note: There are visitation hours in effect in the dormitory rooms. No person of the opposite gender may stay in a dorm room past 1:00 a.m. For those staying on campus, you will need to check-in at the Special Programs office on June 5, 2010 as close to noon as possible. Should you expect to arrive on campus after 10:00 p.m. you will need to alert the SongFest administrator in order for special arrangements to be made. The Special Programs office is located in the Rho Parking Lot, near to where the fire trucks are parked. White and blue signage on the campus street signboards will assist with directions. An information packet will be sent to you after acceptance, which will give further information about shuttle service, directions, meals times and other pertinent information Parking is free on-campus.
